Free online support groups you can join from anywhere
An online support group is a group that meets by video or phone instead of in a room, so you can join from home. There are 765 groups on The Group Guide that take members from any state. 753 are free to join. 84 are led by a licensed professional. Most meet on Zoom. Some meet by phone. You contact the group directly. Free to browse. No account needed.
What an online support group is like
Most online groups meet once a week or once a month at a set time, for about an hour. The leader opens the meeting, people check in, and anyone who wants to can talk. Nobody has to share. You can listen with your camera off the first time, and many people do. Peer groups are run by people who have lived through the same thing. Therapy groups are run by a licensed clinician and have treatment goals.
The big difference from an in-person group is who can come. An online group is open to people who live far from any meeting, cannot drive, work nights, or would rather not be seen walking into a building. Research on online support groups finds that members feel less alone and cope better, much like people in groups that meet in a room.

How to choose an online group
- Check who leads it. A peer leader means shared experience. A licensed professional means treatment. Both are on this page, and the listing says which.
- Check which states it serves. Peer groups take anyone. Therapist-led groups usually serve only the states where the leader is licensed.
- Check the cost. Free, sliding scale, or a set fee. It is on every listing, before you contact anyone.
- Try one meeting. You do not have to talk. If it does not feel right, try another. Many people visit two or three before one fits.
Questions about online support groups
Are online support groups free?
Many are. 753 of the 765 nationwide groups on The Group Guide are free to join. Peer-led groups run by nonprofits are usually free. Groups led by a therapist often charge a fee per meeting, and some take insurance. Every listing says what the group costs before you contact anyone.
Can I join an online group from another state?
For peer-led and community groups, yes. They are open to anyone with an internet connection. Groups led by a therapist are different. A therapist can usually only treat people in the states where they are licensed, so most therapist-led online groups serve a few states. Each listing says which states it serves.
Do I have to turn my camera on?
Most groups let you keep your camera off, at least at first. Some therapy groups ask that everyone be on camera so the group feels like a room. If it matters to you, ask the leader before your first meeting. You can also use only your first name, or a name you choose.
Is an online support group the same as online therapy?
No. A support group is people who share a problem meeting to help each other. A peer leader or a volunteer usually runs it, and it is not treatment. Online therapy is care from a licensed clinician, one on one or in a therapy group, with a treatment plan. Both can help, and many people use one alongside the other. The listing tells you which kind a group is.
What do I need to join an online group?
A phone, tablet, or computer, and a quiet place for an hour. Most groups meet on Zoom. Some meet by phone, which works when internet is poor. Some ask you to sign up first, and some let you just show up. The listing says which, and gives you the link or the number.
Are online groups as helpful as meeting in person?
For many people, yes. Research on online support groups finds that members feel less alone and better able to cope, much like in person. The biggest difference is access. Online groups let people join who live far from any group, cannot drive, work nights, or do not want to be seen walking into a meeting.
If you need help now
A support group is not crisis care. If you or someone you know is struggling right now:
- Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Free, confidential, 24/7.
- If you are afraid of your partner, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.
