Free NEDA Body Image & Eating Disorder Support — Body Project, Helpline, Nationwide
The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) is the largest eating disorder nonprofit in the United States, operating a free helpline, an online screening tool, a support group directory, and The Body Project — a peer-led body image intervention shown in research to reduce body dissatisfaction and eating disorder risk.
The Body Project
The Body Project is a four-session group intervention for high-school and college-age women (and adapted versions for other populations) designed to help participants resist cultural pressures around appearance and reduce body dissatisfaction. Sessions are led by trained peer leaders — often college students or recent graduates — who guide participants through cognitive-dissonance-based activities, including writing exercises, role-plays, and group discussions. Research has consistently shown the Body Project reduces eating disorder symptoms and improves body image.
NEDA Helpline & Online Support
The NEDA Helpline provides free phone and text support for anyone struggling with body image or an eating disorder. Helpline volunteers are trained to help with treatment referrals, screening tool guidance, and emotional support. NEDA’s online screening tool offers an anonymous, free, evidence-based way to assess whether eating concerns warrant professional consultation.
Support Group Directory
NEDA maintains a curated directory of support groups — both NEDA-affiliated and partner-organization groups — searchable by location, format (in-person, virtual, phone), and population. The directory includes groups specifically for body image, BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, men, and parents/caregivers.
Who This Is For
The Body Project is designed for women aged 13-23 (high school and college), though adapted versions exist for adults. The Helpline and directory serve anyone of any age experiencing body image distress, disordered eating, or full eating disorders, and their families.
