Free Narateen Teen Peer Support — Drug Families, Nationwide

Narateen is the teen branch of Nar-Anon Family Groups — a free, 12-step peer fellowship for teenagers (suggested age 13+) whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drug use or addiction. The Narateen program parallels Alateen but specifically supports teens in families where the substance issue is drugs rather than alcohol.

What to Expect

Confidential weekly meetings where teen members share their experience, strength, and hope. Through the 12 steps adapted for young family members, Narateens learn that addiction is a disease they did not cause, cannot cure, and cannot control — and that they are not responsible for the actions of the person using drugs. Meetings are facilitated by trained adult sponsors who follow Nar-Anon’s safety and supervision protocols.

Meeting Formats

In-person Narateen meetings are held in schools, hospitals, juvenile centers, churches, and other professional settings throughout the United States. Some areas also offer virtual Narateen meetings — use the Narateen meeting finder at nar-anon.org/narateen to locate options.

Who This Group Is For

Teens whose parent, sibling, grandparent, close friend, or other significant adult has a drug problem — including prescription medications, marijuana, opioids, stimulants, or any substance use disorder. The substance and the relative’s recovery status do not affect membership.

Why Peer Support Works

Many teens in drug-affected families carry shame, hypervigilance, anger, and isolation. Narateen offers a peer community where these experiences are met with recognition rather than judgment, and a structured program for processing what is happening at home while focusing on the teen’s own wellbeing.

How to Join

Walk in to any open Narateen meeting — no registration, dues, or fees. To protect everyone’s anonymity, members use only first names and what is shared in the group stays in the group. Use the meeting finder at nar-anon.org/find-a-narateen-meeting or contact the Nar-Anon World Service Office for help finding a meeting.
