Free Children's Bereavement Center Kids Grief Support — San Antonio, TX

Free Children's Bereavement Center Kids Grief Support — San Antonio, TX

The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas (CBCST) is a San Antonio nonprofit providing free grief support to children, teens, and families coping with the death of a loved one. CBCST has served the South Texas region for over 20 years and offers bilingual programming to meet the needs of the community.

What to Expect

CBCST uses a peer support model — children and teens meet in age-grouped peer circles led by trained volunteer facilitators while their parents/caregivers meet in a concurrent adult group. The Center’s programming includes art therapy, play-based grief processing, memory work, and structured discussion. Children typically participate in 12-week support cycles, with the option to continue or return as needed.

Programs Offered

Open Door (introductory and ongoing peer support groups for ages 3-18). Bilingual Spanish-language groups (Puertas Abiertas). Camp Courage (annual summer day camp for grieving children). Suicide Loss Support Group. School-based grief programming in partnership with San Antonio-area school districts. Family Bereavement Program for families navigating recent or anticipated loss.

Who This Is For

San Antonio and South Texas area children ages 3-18 who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, grandparent, or other close family member. CBCST serves all causes of death and welcomes families of all backgrounds. Bilingual programming reflects the cultural diversity of South Texas.

Why CBCST Matters in South Texas

San Antonio is a majority-Latino city, and CBCST’s bilingual programming makes free grief support accessible to families who otherwise might face language barriers. The Center has built deep relationships with San Antonio-area schools, hospitals, and hospice programs to reach grieving families across the community.
