About West Virginia Caregiver Support

West Virginia’s caregiver support network, coordinated through the Area Agency on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association, provides support groups, respite care, education, and resources for family caregivers throughout the state. With West Virginia’s aging population and high rates of chronic illness, caregiver support is a critical need. These programs help family caregivers manage the physical, emotional, and financial challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia, chronic illness, or disability.

What Groups Are Offered?

Caregiver support groups meet throughout West Virginia, providing peer support and education for family caregivers. Groups address topics including managing caregiver stress and burnout, understanding dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, navigating the healthcare system, self-care for caregivers, legal and financial planning, and connecting with community resources. The Alzheimer’s Association offers specialized 24/7 support through their helpline.

Who Can Join?

Support groups are open to any family caregiver in West Virginia—spouses, adult children, grandchildren, and other loved ones caring for someone with dementia, chronic illness, or disability. No registration fee or referral is required. Respite care may be available to allow caregivers to attend group meetings.

Meeting Schedule & Location

Groups meet at locations throughout West Virginia, including community centers, churches, and healthcare facilities. Both in-person and virtual options are available. Contact the Area Agency on Aging or the Alzheimer’s Association for groups in your area.
