Free Disability Peer Mentoring - Rochester, MN | SEMCIL

The Southeastern Minnesota Center for Independent Living (SEMCIL) offers free peer mentoring and peer support groups for people with disabilities in the Rochester area. SEMCIL is one of Minnesota’s Centers for Independent Living — consumer-directed organizations run on the principle that people with disabilities are the right experts on disability. Peer support is one of the five core services every Center for Independent Living is mandated to provide, and at SEMCIL it is delivered by people who live it.

What to Expect

A SEMCIL peer mentor is an individual with a disability who has been trained to help consumers locate community resources, identify their own goals, and make adjustments to a newly acquired or progressive disability. The program offers both one-to-one goal-based peer support and peer support groups. Groups are created in response to feedback and requests from the people SEMCIL serves rather than set from above, so the roster reflects what community members have actually asked for — meaning it is worth calling to ask what is currently running and to say what you would want. The goal-based structure of the one-to-one track means sessions move toward something you define, not a fixed curriculum.

Who This Group Is For

People with disabilities and health conditions in the SEMCIL service area, centered on Olmsted County. The program is designed with particular attention to two situations: a newly acquired disability, where everything practical and social is being renegotiated at once, and a progressive disability, where the adjustment does not happen once but keeps recurring as circumstances change. Peer support is available to people of all ages and all disability types.

Why Peer Support Works

Professionals can explain a diagnosis, but they generally cannot tell you what it is like to navigate a workplace, a family, or a city with it. Someone who has already worked that out can, and the independent living movement was built on exactly this insight — that lived experience is a form of expertise, and that the most useful help usually comes sideways from a peer rather than downward from a provider. A mentor who has made the same adjustment also models something quieter but essential: that there is a version of this life that works.
