AGE of Central Texas — Free Caregiver Support Groups in Austin, TX
AGE of Central Texas is a long-established nonprofit serving older adults and family caregivers across the Austin metro and surrounding counties. Its free Caregiver Support Groups give Central Texas caregivers a consistent place to talk about what’s actually happening at home — and a roster of specialized groups means caregivers can find one that matches their specific situation, whether that’s dementia caregiving, caring for a parent, or general caregiving across conditions.
What to Expect
AGE of Central Texas runs three free caregiver support groups on a regular schedule. The General Caregiving in-person group meets the third Thursday of each month from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. with ASL interpretation available. The Dementia Caregiving virtual group meets weekly on Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. via Zoom. The Adult Child Caring for Parent virtual group meets every other Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. Each group is led by trained facilitators and follows a confidential, peer-driven format. Members share what’s happening, listen, and offer one another practical wisdom and company.
Who This Group Is For
The groups are open to family caregivers across Central Texas. The Dementia group is built for people caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, or another form of cognitive decline. The Adult Child group serves the specific experience of caring for an aging parent — including parents in another state, parents living with the caregiver, and parents in care facilities. The General group welcomes any family caregiving situation. AGE of Central Texas also offers an AGE Information & Resource Center with one-on-one guidance, an Adult Day Health Center, and education programs.
Why Peer Support Works
Caregivers in Central Texas often describe a particular loneliness: friends and coworkers don’t see the day-to-day, and even close family may not understand what caregiving requires. A regular support group answers that loneliness by putting caregivers in steady contact with others who understand without needing the backstory. AGE’s specialized groups — dementia, adult child, general — mean members can be in a room with people whose situation actually matches theirs.
