SASMHA — Free South Asian Sexual & Mental Health Community
The South Asian Sexual & Mental Health Alliance (SASMHA) is a national community working at the intersection of sexual health and mental health for South Asians. SASMHA recognizes that these two domains are deeply linked in South Asian experience — and that taboo, family expectations, gender roles, and religious frameworks all shape both — and creates resources, community, and conversation that honor that intersection.
What to Expect
SASMHA’s work includes a content library covering South Asian mental health topics — anxiety, depression, family dynamics, identity — alongside sexual health topics — consent, relationships, queer experience, body image, fertility, intimate partner violence — written specifically for South Asian readers. The organization hosts community discussions and events, partners with South Asian sexual and mental health professionals, and amplifies South Asian voices that aren’t being heard in mainstream health spaces. SASMHA’s resources are intentionally inclusive of queer and trans South Asians, recognizing how often these communities are erased in family and cultural conversation.
Who This Group Is For
SASMHA serves South Asians across the diaspora navigating any combination of mental health and sexual health questions. The platform is particularly valuable for community members who don’t see themselves reflected in mainstream sexual or mental health resources — including queer and trans South Asians, survivors of intimate partner violence in South Asian relationships, South Asians navigating fertility and pregnancy loss, and second-generation South Asians whose questions don’t map neatly onto either South Asian family conversation or mainstream American sexual health content.
Why Peer Support Works
South Asian community members often describe a particular silence around the intersection of sexual and mental health — topics that may be hard to discuss with families, faith communities, or even therapists who don’t share the cultural context. SASMHA’s role is to break that silence with thoughtfully curated content and community, written and led by South Asians for South Asians. The platform’s bilingual content and queer-affirming framing extend its reach across communities that have often been served poorly.
How to Join
SASMHA’s resources are free. Visit sasmha.org to browse the content library on mental health and sexual health, find provider resources, attend community events, and sign up for the newsletter. The organization is national and primarily digital, with community discussions and partner events.
