About This Group
POEM (Perinatal Outreach and Encouragement for Moms) is a specialized program of Mental Health America of Ohio providing free peer mentoring, support groups, and a talk/text support line for new and expectant mothers experiencing postpartum depression, perinatal anxiety, and other maternal mental health challenges. Operating in Columbus and Dayton, POEM also offers the POEM Rise program specifically designed to support Black mothers in their perinatal mental health journey.
What to Expect
POEM provides multiple layers of support for perinatal mental health. Peer mentoring connects new mothers with trained mentors who have personal experience recovering from perinatal mood disorders. Support groups (offered both virtually and in-person) provide safe spaces to share experiences and build community with other mothers. The talk/text support line offers immediate emotional support. POEM Rise specifically addresses the unique challenges faced by Black mothers, providing culturally responsive support. All services are led by certified peer staff with lived experience.
About POEM
POEM was created by Mental Health America of Ohio to address the critical need for peer-based perinatal mental health support. Recognizing that one in five mothers experiences a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, POEM ensures that no mother has to face these challenges alone, with specialized programming to reach underserved communities.
