VA — Free Veterans Peer Support — Charlotte Vet Center
The Charlotte Vet Center is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ national network of Vet Centers — community-based counseling centers that provide free, confidential support to combat veterans, service members, and their families in a non-medical setting. Vet Centers operate independently from VA medical facilities so veterans can access support without needing to be enrolled in VA healthcare or having a service-connected disability rating.
What to Expect
The Charlotte Vet Center offers individual, group, marriage, and family counseling at no cost. Group programming runs throughout the week and includes combat trauma groups, post-9/11 readjustment groups, women veterans groups, and Military Sexual Trauma (MST) groups. The atmosphere is intentionally casual and non-clinical — Vet Centers are staffed largely by veterans themselves, including combat veterans, who provide peer-informed care alongside licensed mental health professionals.

Who This Group Is For
Eligible individuals include: veterans who served in combat zones; veterans who experienced military sexual trauma; veterans who provided mortuary services or recovered remains; Reserve and National Guard members who were activated for at least one day in a combat theater; family members of any of the above; family members of service members who died on active duty. Vet Center services are confidential and do not affect VA disability claims or military records.
Why Vet Centers Work
Many veterans avoid VA medical facilities because of paperwork, wait times, or distrust. Vet Centers were created specifically to fill that gap — informal, peer-staffed, community-based settings where veterans can access trauma care and connection without the medical-system feel. The blend of licensed mental health support and veteran-to-veteran peer connection is the distinguishing feature.
