Free Sibshops for Siblings of Kids with Disabilities — Newton, MA | Family TIES

Massachusetts Family TIES hosts a free monthly Sibshops program in Newton for young siblings of children with disabilities, chronic illness, or special health needs. Sibshops is a nationally recognized model that gives brothers and sisters something they rarely get: dedicated time and attention of their own, among peers who understand exactly what it is like to grow up alongside a sibling with additional needs.

What to Expect

Siblings meet one Sunday a month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Newton JCC, 333 Nahanton Street, Newton, MA, with drop-off and pick-up for participating families. Sibshops blends lively recreational activities with games and discussion that let kids talk about the good parts and the hard parts of having a sibling with a disability. The tone is upbeat and fun by design, so children look forward to coming while also finding real support.

Who This Group Is For

Sibshops welcomes school-age siblings (generally ages 8 and older) of children who have disabilities, chronic illness, or mental health needs. There is no cost for families to participate.

Why Peer Support Works

Siblings of children with disabilities often carry adult-sized worries while their own needs quietly take a back seat. Being with peers who live the same experience helps them feel understood without having to explain. Sibshops channels that shared understanding through play, giving children a healthy outlet and a sense that their feelings, both proud and frustrated, are completely normal.

How to Join

Participation is free. To learn about upcoming dates and register, visit Massachusetts Family TIES online at massfamilyties.org and view the sibling support offerings.
