Free LGBTQ+ Support Group — Līhuʻe, Kauai | YWCA Kauaʻi

LGBTQ+ and MVPFAFF (Māhū, Vaka Sa Fafine, Palopa, Faʻafafine, Akavaʻine, Fakafifine) people face disproportionately high rates of isolation, harassment, and violence, and on a small island like Kauaʻi, finding a dedicated, confidential space to process that can be especially hard to come by. YWCA Kauaʻi built its LGBTQIA2S+ Adult Support Group to fill exactly that gap.

What to Expect
The group meets in person every second and fourth Monday of the month from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sessions are grounded, consent-based, and confidential, focused on connection, relationship-building, and sustainable coping skills rather than crisis intervention. Tea and snacks are provided, and the group operates on a consent-packet model — participants complete a short intake so facilitators can create a space that actually feels safe for everyone in the room.

Who This Group Is For
This group is open to LGBTQIA2S+ and MVPFAFF adults age 18 and older living on Kauaʻi. YWCA Kauaʻi frames its LGBTQ+ programming around the reality that this community experiences disproportionately high rates of victimization and social isolation, and the group is built specifically to counter that — a space where identity doesn’t need to be explained or defended.

Why Peer Support Works
Confidential, consent-based peer spaces give people room to be honest about their experiences without the fear of judgment or exposure that can come with less structured settings. For LGBTQ+ adults, particularly in smaller communities where anonymity is harder to come by, that combination of consistency and confidentiality — the same group, the same trusted facilitators, every other week — can be what makes ongoing connection actually feel possible.

How to Join
The group is free, but RSVP and a completed Group Consent Packet are required in advance. Contact Axel at axel@ywcakauai.org or call (808) 245-5959, ext. 121, to get started. YWCA Kauaʻi is located at 3094 Elua Street, Līhuʻe, HI 96766, and also offers LGBTQ+ trainings for providers and a 24/7 LGBTQ+-friendly domestic violence and sexual assault hotline at (808) 245-6362.
