Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute — Free Dementia Caregiver Support Group — Zoom
The Caregiver Support Group at the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute (USF Health, Tampa, FL) is a free weekly virtual gathering for individuals caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Hosted by one of Florida’s leading dementia research and care centers, this group gives caregivers a protected space to speak openly, connect with others facing similar challenges, and access practical guidance for the caregiving journey. Your loved one does not need to be a patient at the Byrd Institute to attend.
What to Expect
The group meets every Thursday, 2:00–4:30pm ET on Zoom. The first hour features an educational workshop on a rotating monthly topic — recent subjects have included understanding sundowning, navigating Alzheimer’s medications, and palliative care planning. The second half opens into peer discussion where caregivers share what’s working, process challenges, and find community with others who understand the weight of dementia caregiving. Sessions are guided by trained USF Health staff.
Who This Group Is For
Open to anyone caring for a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s or any form of dementia — spouses, adult children, siblings, friends. Loved ones with dementia are kindly asked not to attend, so caregivers can speak freely. No prior support group experience is needed, and no pre-registration is required. Contact the facilitator for the Zoom link and join when you’re ready.
Why Peer Support Works
Dementia caregiving is among the most emotionally and physically demanding roles a person can take on. Isolation, burnout, and grief are common, and the caregiver’s own needs are often overlooked. Groups like this one create space specifically for caregivers — centering their experiences and wellbeing. Research consistently shows that caregiver support groups reduce depression and anxiety, improve coping strategies, and help caregivers sustain their role with greater resilience over time.
