Free Autism Family Support Meetings — Baton Rouge | Autism Society

Autism Society — Greater Baton Rouge Chapter has been an affiliate of the national Autism Society, the oldest grassroots autism advocacy organization in the country, for more than 40 years. The chapter’s quarterly meetings are a free, open gathering where autistic individuals, parents, and caregivers across the greater Baton Rouge region connect with one another and hear from professionals working in the field.

What to Expect

Meetings are held on Saturdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd, Baton Rouge. Each meeting pairs a guest speaker — clinicians, educators, service providers, and community program leaders — with unstructured time for families to network with other families navigating the same systems. The chapter also circulates information about upcoming trainings, workshops, and conferences, and helps members find support to attend them. Between meetings, the chapter maintains ongoing information and resource materials for autistic people, their families, and the professionals serving them, and shares local accessibility offerings such as sensory-friendly museum days.

Who This Group Is For

Autistic individuals of any age and their families across nine parishes: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, West Feliciana, and Tangipahoa. Newly diagnosed families and long-time members are equally welcome, as are grandparents, siblings, and allies. Meetings are free and open to the community.

Why Peer Support Works

Families navigating autism services spend an enormous amount of energy on systems that are not designed to be navigated: IEPs, waiver waitlists, provider shortages, transition planning. Most of the workable knowledge lives with other families who have already been through it — which evaluator actually returns calls, what wording moved a school district, what the waitlist really looks like. A local chapter concentrates that knowledge in one room. Just as important, autistic adults and parents alike describe the relief of being somewhere they do not have to explain or apologize for how their family functions. The chapter’s stated values — dignity, equity, inclusion, diversity, and integrity — set that tone deliberately.

How to Join

Meetings are free; simply attend. The chapter posts upcoming dates and speakers at autismsocietygbr.org, and questions can be sent to autismsocietygbr@gmail.com. The next scheduled meeting listed by the chapter is Saturday, September 12, 2026, 2:00–4:00 p.m. at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library — check the site to confirm before traveling.
