First H.E.L.P. (Honoring, Educating, Listing, Preventing) is a national nonprofit serving the families, departments, and communities of first responders who have died by suicide — police, fire, EMS, corrections, dispatchers, and other emergency personnel. Formerly known as Blue H.E.L.P., the organization expanded its mission to honor all first responder loss survivors. First H.E.L.P. combines peer-to-peer family support, a national database tracking first responder suicide, education, advocacy for benefits, and the only camp in the country for children who have lost a first responder parent to suicide.

What to Expect

First H.E.L.P.’s family support program includes Honor Boxes — care packages sent to bereaved families and departments containing a personal condolence card written by another family that has suffered the same loss, plus a blanket embroidered with the loved one’s name. The peer connection model ensures newly bereaved families hear directly from other families who understand — no platitudes, no avoidance. First H.E.L.P. also runs an annual all-expenses-paid camp for children who lost a first responder parent to suicide; campers bond with other kids who share the same experience and work with trained counselors specializing in childhood traumatic loss. The 1stHelp.org database connects responders and families to resources and tracks suicide and traumatic-stress events nationally.

Who This Group Is For

First H.E.L.P. serves the families of first responders lost to suicide — spouses, partners, children, parents, siblings, and other close family — across all first responder types. Departments and agencies that have lost a member to suicide can also engage with First H.E.L.P. for support and education. The children’s camp specifically serves kids who lost a first responder parent. Survivors of Blue Suicide (a partner organization) serves law enforcement families specifically.

Why Peer Support Works

First responder suicide carries layers of grief that families often describe as uniquely isolating — the public-facing identity of the responder, the institutional response, the questions about what could have been seen sooner, and the particular sense that civilian grief support often doesn’t fit. First H.E.L.P.’s family-to-family model directly answers that: a bereaved family hearing from another bereaved family is met without translation. The children’s camp creates the same peer experience for kids.

How to Join

First H.E.L.P. services are free. Visit 1sthelp.org to request an Honor Box for a recently bereaved family, register a child for the annual camp, search the resource database, or contact peer support staff. Families can also engage as peer supporters to other families further along in the process.
