Free Domestic Violence Survivor Group — Great Bend, KS | FCC

Family Crisis Center, Inc. operates the Domestic & Sexual Violence Center serving central and south-central Kansas, and its survivor support groups are among the few in the region that remove the two barriers that most often keep people from attending: childcare and dinner. Both are provided free at every meeting. The agency serves adults and children experiencing domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking regardless of gender, legal status, or orientation, and does not require survivors to report abuse to law enforcement in order to receive any service.

What to Expect

In Great Bend, the Domestic Violence Survivor Group meets every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, and a Sexual Assault Survivor Group meets every other Monday from 5:00 to 6:15 PM. In Pratt, a combined Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Survivor Group meets every Monday from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Each week brings a new discussion topic and activity, so the group is genuinely drop-in — survivors are welcome to attend as often as they wish and do not fall behind by missing a week. Advocates facilitate, and the stated aim is connection and resource access rather than clinical treatment. Transportation assistance may be available on request.

Who This Group Is For

These groups are for primary and secondary survivors — the person who experienced the abuse, and the family members and loved ones carrying its indirect consequences. Parents who have avoided support groups because they had nowhere to put their children will find that concern addressed directly here. Children’s groups and activities run alongside adult meetings. Survivors who are still in the relationship, recently out of it, or years past it are all welcome.

Why Peer Support Works

Domestic violence tends to shrink a person’s world down to one relationship and one interpretation of events. Group settings widen it back out. Survivors consistently report that the most useful thing they get from a peer group is not advice but recognition — the moment someone else describes a pattern they had privately assumed was their own fault. Shared meals and a consistent weekly rhythm matter more than they sound: they rebuild the ordinary social routines that abuse erodes, and they make the group a place people return to rather than a service they use once.
