Free Disability & Chronic Illness Support — Online | Mishkan Chicago

The Disability & Chronic Illness Support Group, offered through Maggie’s Place at Mishkan Chicago, gives adults living with disability or chronic illness a dedicated space to be seen and understood. Chronic conditions can be isolating — symptoms fluctuate, plans change, and it can feel like the people around you don’t fully get it. This monthly virtual gathering brings together like-minded peers who know that experience from the inside, guided by a clinician who keeps the space safe and supportive.

What to Expect

The group meets virtually for about an hour in the early evening (recent sessions have run 6:00–7:00 PM Central). Sessions are clinician-led, and the tone is warm and conversational rather than clinical. Members are invited to talk honestly about both struggles and successes — navigating symptoms, managing energy, dealing with medical systems, and celebrating the wins that people outside the chronic illness world might not notice. Because the group is online, you can join from home, which matters on days when leaving the house isn’t realistic.

Who This Group Is For

This group is for adults 18 and older who are experiencing disability or chronic illness of any kind. It is sponsored by Maggie’s Place, Mishkan Chicago’s support and wellness initiative, and reflects the community’s commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive spaces. You don’t need to have your diagnosis figured out or your story polished — if ongoing health challenges are part of your life, you belong here.

Why Peer Support Works

Living with chronic illness or disability often means carrying an invisible load. Peer support groups reduce that isolation by connecting you with people who share the lived experience — not just sympathy, but genuine understanding. Research consistently links peer connection with improved coping, reduced distress, and a stronger sense of agency in managing long-term health conditions. Talking with others who ‘get it’ can make the hard days feel less lonely and the good days easier to recognize.

How to Join

The group is offered at no charge and meets monthly online. Register through Mishkan Chicago’s online form to receive meeting access details.
