Free Diabulimia (ED-DMT1) Peer Mentorship - National | We Are Diabetes
About This Group
We Are Diabetes has provided support, education, and hope since 2012 to people living with type 1 diabetes who also struggle with disordered eating, sometimes called diabulimia or ED-DMT1 (eating disorder-diabetes mellitus type 1). This dual diagnosis, in which someone restricts or manipulates insulin to control weight, is not a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5, but it is a serious and recognized pattern that the diagnostic manual classifies as a form of purging behavior.
Ways to Find Support
The free We Are Diabetes Mentorship Program pairs anyone age 14 or older who is working toward, or in the early stages of, recovery from ED-DMT1 with a trained mentor who has personally recovered from the same dual diagnosis. Mentors and mentees connect weekly by phone, text, or video chat, reducing the isolation that so often comes with managing both a chronic illness and eating disorder recovery at once. We Are Diabetes also offers referrals to providers experienced in treating both conditions together, along with support and education for family members and loved ones.
Who This Is For
People age 14 and older living with type 1 diabetes who are working on recovery from disordered eating or insulin restriction, plus their families, anywhere in the U.S. including Colorado. Participants should have an endocrinologist or primary care provider managing their diabetes care and be connected with a mental health provider; We Are Diabetes can help with both if needed.
