What Recovery Looks Like From the Outside

If someone you love is getting sober or getting well, you probably expect a straight line. Treatment, then better, then done. Recovery does not go that way. It goes forward, slips, and goes forward again. Knowing that ahead of time is the difference between a family that helps and one that gives up at the first slip.

This page is for

Partners, parents, and friends of someone in recovery from alcohol, drugs, or a mental illness.
Anyone who has said "but you were doing so well."

Safety first

A return to use after time off can be deadly, because tolerance drops. Keep naloxone in the house if opioids are involved. In an emergency, call 911.

What to expect

It takes years, not weeks. Most people who recover needed more than one try. The first try is practice.
A slip is not the end. What matters is the next day: the call, the meeting, the honesty.
Early recovery is not pretty. Moody, tired, sometimes angry. They are rebuilding a nervous system. Give it a year.
What this means for you
1Notice the showing up, not the streak. "You went to the meeting" beats "ninety days!" Streaks break. Showing up is the habit.
2Say less, be around more. Lectures do not work. Dinner at the same time does.
3Get your own group. Your recovery from the years of watching is real. Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, and NAMI Family exist for it.

What the research says, in plain words.

A national survey found 22 million US adults, about 1 in 11, have resolved a serious alcohol or drug problem. About half did it with help. Recovery is common.1
A long-term study found the road to stable recovery took many years and several treatment episodes for most people. More than one try is the norm.2
Family members who join Al-Anon cope better and feel less alone, whether or not the drinker changes.3
Making the most of it
Ask what helps, once. "What do you want me to do if you're struggling?" Then do that, not what you would want.
Keep your life. Your hobbies, your friends, your sleep. A family that stops living to watch burns out.
Plan for the slip now. Decide together what happens: who they call, what you will and will not do. Then you are not deciding in a crisis.
Questions to ask a family group before you go
1Is this for family members, not the person in recovery?
2Is it for addiction, mental illness, or both?
3Can I come even if my person is not in treatment?
