Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) groups

TF-CBT (trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy) is an evidence-based treatment for children and teens who have experienced trauma. The group format follows the same core components (the PRACTICE model), with the child and their caregiver attending parallel groups at the same time.

Who it's for, and who it's not

For children and adolescents, not adults. Caregiver participation is expected.
Active safety crises, severe dissociation, or psychosis may need stabilization first.
Very young children (under 3) usually need individual, not group, format. In crisis? Call or text 988.

What it's used for

Children and teens (ages 3 to 18) who have experienced trauma.
Sexual or physical abuse, domestic or community violence, disaster, and traumatic grief.
When trauma brings PTSD symptoms, depression, behavior problems, or shame.
What to expect
1Sessions usually run 60 to 90 minutes, in parallel child and caregiver groups.
2Structured, following the curriculum. The two groups cover matching content.
3The trauma narrative (writing, drawing, or storytelling) is central, paced with care.

TF-CBT has one of the strongest evidence bases in child and adolescent trauma treatment.

A 2022 meta-analysis found significant reductions in PTSD, depression, and behavior problems, beating active comparisons and waitlist.1
A developer review confirmed it as well-established across diverse trauma types and cultures.2
Making the most of it
Go at the child's pace. Trauma work is gradual and structured.
Caregivers take part. Your involvement supports the gains.
Skills come first. Coping precedes the trauma narrative.
Questions to ask before you join
1Is the leader trained in TF-CBT?
2Is there a parallel caregiver group, and am I expected to attend?
3Is it a closed cohort? How many sessions, and when does it start?
4What does it cost? Is there a free or sliding scale option?
