What to know about

Internal Family Systems (IFS) groups

Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Richard Schwartz, holds that the mind is naturally multiple: we all contain distinct parts, each with its own role. Some carry burdens from past wounds and take on extreme protective roles. Beneath them is a core Self, marked by curiosity and compassion, that can lead healing.

Who it's for, and who it's not

A fit if you're curious about your inner world or struggle with self-criticism.
Not a crisis intervention or a start for active suicidal ideation. In crisis? Call or text 988.
Active psychosis may need other treatment before IFS group work.

What it's used for

Trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance use.
Harsh self-criticism, internal conflict, and relationship difficulties.
Popular in complex trauma, as a gentler path than direct exposure work.
What to expect
1Sessions usually run 90 minutes, mixing brief teaching with experiential work.
2You'll learn the language of parts, Self, managers, firefighters, and exiles.
3Gentle, curious, and non-pathologizing. It can be emotionally moving.

IFS's formal research base is smaller than CBT's, but growing.

A 2013 proof-of-concept trial of group IFS for rheumatoid arthritis found improvements in pain, function, self-compassion, and depression versus control.1
A 2021 pilot in survivors of multiple childhood traumas found large reductions in PTSD, depression, and impairment, held at follow-up.2
Making the most of it
Meet your parts. Curiosity, not judgment, is the stance.
Go at your pace. You lead; nothing is forced.
Witnessing helps. Being seen meeting your parts matters.
Questions to ask before you join
1Is the leader trained through the IFS Institute, and at what level?
2Is it a closed group, an open group, or a retreat intensive?
3What does it cost? Is there a sliding scale option?
