Behavioral Activation groups

Behavioral Activation (BA) is a structured, evidence-based treatment for depression built on a simple idea: depression sustains itself through withdrawal. Stop doing things, get less reward, feel worse. BA breaks that cycle by helping you steadily increase activities that bring accomplishment, pleasure, or connection, even when motivation is absent. It uses action to drive mood, not the reverse.

Who it's for, and who it's not

Best for mild to moderate depression, if you'll engage with homework between sessions.
Especially good if you recognize you've been withdrawing and want an action-oriented path.
Not for acute crisis or severe depression as a sole treatment. In crisis? Call or text 988.

What it's used for

Primarily depression: major, persistent, and depression with chronic illness or age.
Anxiety too, since avoidance maintains both, and co-occurring depression and anxiety.
Adapted for older adults, chronic pain, stroke survivors, and serious mental illness.
What to expect
1Sessions usually run 60 to 90 minutes, practical and problem-solving focused.
2You monitor daily activities, then schedule new ones, starting small and building.
3Consistent homework: activity monitoring and scheduling are central to how BA works.

Behavioral activation has a strong and growing evidence base.

A 2020 Cochrane review of 53 trials (5,000+ people) found BA more effective than control and comparable to CBT, and deliverable by non-specialists.1
A 2020 meta-analysis of 27 studies found effects on depression, anxiety, and activation itself.2
Because non-specialists can run it, BA is especially accessible in community and primary care.
Making the most of it
Schedule, don't wait. Action comes first; mood follows.
Start small. A tiny activity done beats a big one planned.
Track what you do. Notice which activities lift you.
Questions to ask before you join
1Who leads the group, and what is their training?
2How many sessions, and is it a closed cohort?
3What does it cost? Is there a free or sliding scale option?
