ADHD Skills & Support Groups for Adults

Adult ADHD groups come in two distinct forms. Skills training groups apply structured, evidence-based CBT adapted for ADHD to build practical strategies for attention, organization, time, and emotion. Peer support groups offer community, shared experience, and accountability without a clinical curriculum. Both fill real gaps: ADHD is underdiagnosed in adults and carries deep shame, especially after years of being called lazy or disorganized. CHADD and ADDA run free peer networks; CBT skills groups run through clinics.

Who it's for, and who it's not

Skills groups suit adults ready to commit to a 12-session program.
Not first if significant depression or anxiety needs addressing first.
Peer groups aren't treatment or a substitute for diagnosis. Call or text 988.

What it's for

Skills groups: adults with confirmed or suspected ADHD wanting practical tools.
Helpful when medication leaves real functional gaps, or alongside no medication.
Peer groups: any adult with ADHD wanting community and accountability.
What to expect
1CBT groups: structured, 60 to 90 minutes, one skill per session with homework.
2Topics: planning systems, breaking tasks down, managing distraction, adaptive thinking.
3Peer groups: open discussion, often with an educational segment or guest speaker.

CBT for adult ADHD has a well-established, growing evidence base.

A 2023 meta-analysis of 28 trials found CBT cut core ADHD symptoms and the depression and anxiety that often accompany it.1
Most trials used a group format. Peer groups aren't tested directly, but peer support broadly builds connection and self-management.2
Making the most of it
Use the group as scaffolding. The meeting itself is a commitment structure.
Do the homework. External deadlines are part of how it works.
Borrow what works. Other members' workarounds are gold.
Questions to ask before you join
